Academic Integrity for Faculty

What is Considered Misuse of Artificial Intelligence Tools?

In Assiniboine's Policy A25, misuse of artificial intelligence tools is considered a form of cheating. The policy defines cheating as:

  • “the use or attempted use of unauthorized materials, information, or study aids in any academic exercise” (Assiniboine Community College, 2023).

Misuse of Artificial Intelligence Tools Examples

Examples of the misuse of artificial intelligence tools include, but are not limited to:

  • using an artificial intelligence tool to write an essay when such use is not allowed
  • using an artificial intelligence tool to create a graphic when such use is not allowed
  • using an artificial intelligence tool to write a reflection when such use is not allowed
  • using an artificial intelligence tool to create coding when such use is not allowed

Prevention

There are a number of ways for students to avoid misusing artificial intelligence tools, including:
  • Discuss academic integrity with your students
  • Discuss acceptable use of artificial intelligence tools with your students
  • Understand how artificial intelligence tools work and model their ethical use
  • Address generative artificial intelligence in assignment instructions
  • Use the assessment integrity, research, and/or the academic integrity checklist
  • Integrate course learning materials and in-class activities into written assignments
  • Require writing outlines
  • Require that students provide research notes if requested
  • Implement assignment scaffolding with multiple drafts
    • Provide ongoing feedback and build on prior knowledge
  • Use shorter, in-class assignments to help identify skills/abilities
  • Assign and assess higher order thinking skills
  • Assign live presentations or demonstrations rather than a final written assessment

Identification

The Academic Misconduct Procedures Manual which accompanies Policy A25 will point staff towards procedures and resources to help gather information for the identification of potential academic misconduct. Contact the Manager of Library Services for more information.
