Citing with Zotero

Zotero and other citation tools are not perfect. They rely on the information you add. You need to check that information is entered correctly. If something is wrong or missing, you will need to fix it yourself.

Create a Zotero Account

To access Zotero, first you need to register for an account.

Install Zotero

To use all of Zotero's features, you'll need to install the:

  • desktop application
  • browser connector
  • MS Word plug-in
The desktop application must be installed in order to use the Connector and Word plug-in.

Zotero Mobile Apps

Enjoy the same great features as the desktop application on your mobile device.

Adding References

There are many ways to add references to your Zotero library:

  • Using the web Connector: this is the best way to import references into your library.
  • Exporting from databases: most databases allow you to export references to citation managers like Zotero.
  • Adding references using identifiers like ISBN, DOI, or PubMed ID: use the Zotero application's identifier import to add references to your library.
  • Adding a reference manually: use this option when you're unable to import references using other methods.

Watch the suggested video walkthroughs to learn how to add references to your Zotero library.

Be careful! Imported references might contain errors. You are responsible for verifying that the information is correct. Compare the reference details with the item you have in-hand.
