Remember that when writing a paragraph, you are trying to make a point about something. If your paragraph is about the fact that the sky is blue, prove it to me. You do this by following these simple steps:

  • Introduce the topic: usually you will do this by stating the point that you seek to prove.
  • Definition: provide a definition of the key term(s). This will often involve a citation.
  • Example: this is where you talk about your example, or evidence.
  • Relate: you need to show that this is a valid example of your definition. This is an example of ____ because _____.

Example Paragraph

One of the theories of aging that applies to C.D. is the biological theory of wear and tear. According to wear and tear theories, the body breaks down over time because of "repeated use and injury of the body over time as it performs its highly specialized functions" (Eliopoulus, 2005, p.16). As noted in the patient interview, C.D. was an avid tennis player of the course of his life, and he now suffers from tendonitis in his elbow and ankle. The wear and tear theory explains C.D.'s problems with tendonitis because of the repeated use of his elbow and ankle while playing tennis over many years.
